Before you buy, before you build, before you hire.
Plain-spoken guides for Long Island homeowners planning electrical work. Written by a licensed electrician who’d rather you understand the project than oversell you on it.
Browse the guidesFive Guides
The five projects most homeowners ask us about.
Each guide covers what to know first, what affects cost, the mistakes we see most, and the questions to ask before you sign anything. Free PDF checklists in every one.
Before You Buy an EV Charger
Panel capacity, Level 2 vs Level 1, hardwired vs plug-in — what to know before you click buy.
Read the guideBefore You Upgrade to 200 Amps
When you actually need it, what gets replaced, and what a fair Long Island scope looks like.
Read the guideBefore Adding Recessed Lights
Layout, color temp, dimmers, and the design mistakes that ruin a $3,000 ceiling.
Read the guideBefore Finishing a Basement
Plan the wiring before walls close — adding circuits later is 5–10× more expensive.
Read the guideBefore Installing Landscape Lighting
Restraint, warm color, and the small details that separate a magazine yard from a runway.
Read the guideWhy this matters
The cheapest decision is usually the most informed one.
Most expensive electrical mistakes are made before any wire is pulled — buying the wrong charger, missing a panel limitation, skipping a permit, finishing a basement without dedicated circuits in the right walls.
These guides exist because we’d rather spend 30 minutes on a phone call helping you avoid those mistakes than 6 hours fixing them later. If we’re the right contractor for the job, great. If not, you’ll still walk away knowing more.
Patterns We See
What homeowners usually get wrong.
Five patterns we fix every month. None of them are your fault — they’re just things nobody told you.
01
Buying equipment before checking the panel
EV chargers, hot tubs, mini splits — all bought online before anyone confirms the panel can handle them. Then install day becomes ‘bad news day.’
02
Underestimating permits
Permits aren’t optional and they aren’t a cash grab. Skipping them creates problems at home sale, voids warranties, and can void homeowner’s insurance.
03
Picking the cheapest quote without comparing scope
A $2,000 difference between two quotes almost always means one quote is leaving things out. Compare line by line, not bottom line.
04
Not planning for future loads
Finishing a project with zero panel slots left, or a basement with no spare conduit. Costs nothing now, costs everything later.
05
Over-lighting the outside
More fixtures isn’t better. The best landscape lighting feels like moonlight, not a runway.
