200 Amp Panel Upgrade Cost on Long Island (2026)
Honest pricing — no surprise change orders. These ranges reflect what Long Island homeowners actually pay in Suffolk and Nassau County, including permit fees and the third-party electrical inspection.
Panel upgrade cost on Long Island is covered in more detail in our 200-amp cost guide, including what moves a job from the low end of the range to the high end. The on-site work for a straightforward 100-amp to 200-amp swap is usually one day. Power is off for most of that day. The permit and the PSEG Long Island disconnect and reconnect are what add one to three weeks on the calendar before install day.

Long Island Towns We Serve
Suffolk County is where most of these upgrades happen. Ronkonkoma, Lake Ronkonkoma, Holbrook, Centereach, Selden, Farmingville, Sayville, and Patchogue still have plenty of postwar houses on 100-amp services. The symptom is the same in each town: the air conditioner and the microwave should not be able to knock the lights down, and a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel should not stay in the wall because it has "been fine." We upgrade the service, coordinate PSEG, and pull the permit in the town that covers the address.
A normal upgrade starts with a look at the panel, the meter, and what you want to add. We write a fixed price before any work is scheduled. On install day the power is off while the new panel is landed, the breakers are labeled, and the grounding is brought up to code. PSEG Long Island comes for the disconnect and reconnect when the service equipment changes. Then the inspector signs off. Most straightforward 100-amp to 200-amp swaps are one day of on-site work after the permit is in hand.
You do not need an upgrade for every project. A healthy 200-amp panel with open spaces can often take a charger or a new circuit. We say that when it is true. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels are the exception: those come out, even if the lights still work today.

Panel Upgrade FAQ
How much does a 200 amp panel upgrade cost on Long Island?
Most 200 amp panel upgrades on Long Island run $1,800–$3,500 installed. Pricing depends on whether the meter pan, service mast, and grounding need to be replaced, and whether your township requires a separate permit fee. Homes that also need a PSEG service cut-in or a new riser typically land at the higher end.
Do I need a permit to upgrade my electrical panel on Long Island?
Yes. Every town on Long Island requires an electrical permit for a panel upgrade, plus a separate third-party electrical inspection. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and coordinate PSEG for the meter cut-in as part of the job.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
The on-site work is typically 6–8 hours for a 100A-to-200A swap. Power is off for most of the day. Permit and PSEG coordination add 1–3 weeks to the calendar before install day.
Do I really need 200 amps?
If you have central AC plus electric oven, dryer, or are planning an EV charger, heat pump, or finished basement, 200A is the standard answer. Homes still on 60–100A with FPE or Zinsco panels should upgrade regardless of load for safety reasons.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Often, if the house is still on 100 amps. A Level 2 charger is a continuous load, and many Suffolk County homes do not have room for it on the existing service. We run a load calculation as part of the free estimate. If the panel can take the charger, we say so. If it cannot, we quote the upgrade and the charger together.
